Hands on Heritage
Artifact Identification and Tea
Fundraiser to support the “Hands On Heritage!” public archaeology Project that is studying the European historic occupation of Nanaimo’s oldest existing known residence
The ASBC Nanaimo Branch hosted the "Artifact ID & Tea" Saturday, September 4,2004 to help promote and fundraise for the Hands On Heritage! Public Archaeology Project located at 55 Haliburton Street in Nanaimo. Experts included Grant Keddie (curator, Royal BC Museum), Tom Bown (local historian), Lynette Harper (museologist and sessional professor at Malaspina), as well as ASBC-NB's own Dr. Imogene Lim (professor, Malaspina) and Colleen Parsley (consulting archaeologist). Twenty-four visitors came to the tea to have their artifacts identified and pieces ranged from broken pottery to coins. Grant Keddie brought many artifacts for people to view and inquire about and a range of books was available for browsing. The food was truly fantastic and much thanks goes to the ASBC-NB members that supplied baking and other treats. Another big thank you goes to those members who volunteered their time to work at the tea. A special thank you goes out to Tim Horton's on Bowen Road who donated some goodies and Thrifty Foods in Port Place Mall for donating the tent we used. The funds raised during this event will help in completing such a worthwhile community project.
